Mercedes-Benz Expands Its Application of Automotive Carbon Fiber Materials

The BMW i, which uses carbon fiber lightweight body and electric technology as its selling point, is attracting attention and will create a new market and take an advantage in the new round of technology competition. Mercedes-Benz's lightweight road also chose carbon fiber materials. Last year, it cooperated with Toray, the world's largest carbon fiber material manufacturer, to develop carbon fiber for vehicles.

According to the German automotive media, Mercedes-Benz plans to launch the E-class Superlight in 2015. The car is positioned in the coupe market. Its curb weight is only 1300 kg, 350 kg lighter than traditional models, and its design style is similar to the CLS four-door Coupe. Since the body of the E-Class Superlight is made of ultra-high-strength carbon fiber material, the B-pillars are abandoned, the rear door hinge is mounted on the C-pillar, and the rear door is opened back to facilitate the rear passengers. In terms of power, E-Class Superlight uses hybrid or fuel cell systems, and its annual sales volume is expected to be 20,000.

Not only E Superlight, Mercedes-Benz will introduce carbon fiber materials into various models. Mercedes-Benz is currently developing a super sports car positioned on top of the SLS, which is expected to be named after the SCS. The car will also use carbon fiber materials in large quantities.
