Expert opinion: SVI 6 brings new challenges to automotive engines

January 14, 2023

----Gu Yunshan, Professor of the School of Mechanical and Vehicle Engineering, Beijing Institute of Technology and Director of National Laboratory of Automotive Power and Emissions Testing:

The Sixth Standard of Light Commercial Vehicles is Further Reinforced

Air pollution has become more and more serious in some major cities in China. Many places in the country have been affected by haze. More and more people are concerned about air quality. Officials believe that the contribution of motor vehicle emissions to PM2.5 is relatively high, with Beijing accounting for about 31%, Shanghai about 26%, and Guangzhou about 21%. The main substances emitted by motor vehicles are carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons.

The sixth national emission standard of light commercial vehicles is compared with Guowu. The principle of fuel neutrality is adopted, and the emission limits of gasoline, diesel and gas engines are the same. This increases the control requirements for fuel vehicle evaporative emission of gasoline vehicles, and modifies the requirements for low temperature emissions, including gasoline and diesel. Vehicles are required to control the emission of pollutants, and new emissions requirements (RDE) under actual road conditions have been increased, OBD detection requirements have been improved, and coordinated control of greenhouse gases has been proposed. This means a greater challenge for engine companies, and of course it is also an opportunity for companies with strong technology reserves and active responses.

--- Jing Xiaojun, Director of Engine Room of Tianjin Testing Institute:

The Sixth National Standard requires heavy-duty vehicle emissions and fuel consumption to be up to the same time

Although heavy-duty vehicle emission testing methods are about to be introduced soon, some problems still exist for production consistency and in-use vehicle compliance management. For example, how can you quickly find a super car? Which vehicles should be checked for in-use vehicle compliance? These are the problems to be solved.

Engine manufacturers should ensure the reliability of materials, manufacturing processes, and product quality of related parts and components to ensure that they function properly during their life. If the emission control fails due to quality problems during the warranty period, the company must take responsibility. In addition, the six standards for heavy-duty vehicles require vehicle emissions and fuel consumption to meet the standards at the same time. The third phase of the fuel consumption limit standard to be implemented in July 2019 will reduce fuel consumption by 15% compared with the second phase, while the heavy vehicle industry will reduce its six-standard nitrogen oxide emission by 77% compared to the National V, which means that only the engine technology is used. With the upgrade, it is difficult to reduce both emissions and fuel consumption.
