According to the latest statistics from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, in the first half of the year, China produced 3,630,300 vehicles and sold 3.5352 million vehicles, an increase of 28.94% and 26.71% over the same period last year. Statistics also show that in the first half of the year, the cumulative production of passenger cars was 2,596,300 and sales were 2,511,600, an increase of 40.30% and 36.53% year-on-year; commercial vehicles were sold and produced 1,034,400 and 1,023,600, an increase of 7.16% and 7.71% respectively.

Industry analysts believe that due to frequent new cars during the year, price competition is inevitable, and at the same time it may lead to an increase in inventory of some manufacturers. In the second half of the year, the increase in automobile production and sales will slow down. However, production and sales may still maintain a year-on-year increase of around 20%.

According to statistics, from January to June, the top ten automobile manufacturers in terms of sales volume were: SAIC, FAW, Dongfeng, Chang'an, BAIC, Chery, Hafei, GAC, Geely and Brilliance, which sold 621,400 vehicles and 562,900 vehicles respectively. 454,200 units, 369,100 units, 337,100 units, 144,200 units, 141,300 units, 126,600 units, 105,900 units, and 92,200 units, up 54.85%, 23.28%, 26.10%, 8.39%, 11.94%, respectively, 72.15%, 9.61%, 15.41%, 55.62% and 62.11%. From January to June, the above-mentioned ten companies sold a total of 295.49 million automobiles, accounting for 83.59% of the total sales of automobiles.

Judging from the data provided by the company, Shanghai General Motors won the semi-annual sales championship with an absolute advantage, selling a total of 201,901 vehicles, an increase of 49% compared with the same period of last year. According to information from the Volkswagen Group, sales of Volkswagen Group China and its two joint ventures Shanghai Volkswagen and FAW-Volkswagen increased by 30.2% year-on-year in the first half of the year. Including imported vehicles, the actual sales volume of the Volkswagen Group in January-June 2006 was 345,375 units, far exceeding the 265,345 units in the first half of 2005. Volkswagen, which is under constant attention, finally ushered in steady growth in the first half of the year after it stopped falling, and continued to lead the Chinese car market with a market share of 17.1%. The independent brand Chery Automobile was also implemented through the “Pentium 06” strategy. In January and June, it sold a total of 144,200 vehicles, and advanced its ranks among the top four passenger cars. This is not only another round of upgrading after the Chery’s last quarter last year. Fully reflects the strong vitality of independent brands, but also the best results of independent brands. At the same time, Chery also achieved the first place in the first half of China’s top ten auto groups with an increase of 72.1% year-on-year, becoming the fastest-growing auto group.
